about

The great migration of the nineteen twenties and thirties from the dustbowl states of the mid-west to California and the other coastal states gave rise to a tradition of migrant and hobo songs that influenced songwriting for a generation. Many of these songs describe a fantastical destination epitomised in the song Big Rock Candy Mountain. “Where lemonade springs and the blue bird sings.” These songs echo songs of the enslaved people that talk of “Camp Ground.” A place of joy and comfort only reached in death. Present day migrations northwards from war torn regions of Africa and the Middle East across the Mediterranean to Europe and perhaps, finally, across The Channel are undertaken with the same purpose, to escape extreme hardship and find peace and purpose.

lyrics

You know I heard the stories told
By many people they were young and they were old
How England does this world bestride
Of how hope and Justice is It’s pride
And here I am, and here I go
I’m on a long cold lonely road

When trains and planes cost so much less
And they could carry me without the stress
I risked my life I took a boat
It had too many people in to float
And here I am, and here I go
I’m on a long cold lonely road

Chorus
And if I had a place to stay
A certain place to stay and to play
Then I wouldn’t move at all
You know I wouldn’t move at all

And so I took a wagon ride
I struggled for place to try and hide
Between the wheels, below the frame
I clung on through the cold and driving rain
And here I am, and here I go
I’m on a long cold lonely road

In all the world there is one place
Where joy and laughter is the face
Of those who greet you on the road
Of those who come to share your heavy load
And here I am, and here I go
I’m on a long cold lonely road
